HYPOALLERGENIC - BLACK URUSHI Goenne Black Label series.

As we heard many of you want to get into kintsugi craft but are concerning about allergy and rash from regular usuhi.  Here is the low-allergenic urushi for your kintsugi project.

What makes this urushi hypoallergenic?

This product is developed by the leading urushi refinery in Japan, by adding a special protein into raw urushi that reduces the activeness of the natural allergens.

Are the properties the same as regular urushi product?

Our kintsugi artisan tested the product in-house.

STRENGTH

The strength is the same as regular urushi.

VISCOSITY

Hypoallergenic Urushi is thicker than regular urushi.  If you have experienced regular urushi, you will notice the thickness is different.  Consider adjusting your priming formula slightly to make your application easier.  (E.g. Painting extreme details or thin lines with a thick gummy paint may become diificult).  Another suggestion is to thin the hypoallergenic urushi with turpentine or camphor oil to a more liquid consistency before application.   Whenever possible, we use camphor oil instead of turpentine as inhaling fume is not healthy.  But if camphor oil is not accessible in your country, turpentine is the alternative option.  Ask your local teacher about consistency, or do some experience to get to a comfortable viscocity for your project.

COLOR

This Hypoallergenic Black urushi matches the color of our regular black urushi.

USE

Black-URUSHI is used in base, mid or final priming.  It can also be used as final finish in kintsugi.  Polishing it to achieve glossy sheen as final finish.

URUSHI  REFINERY

Fukui Prefecture is known as the birth place of urushi with 1500 years of history.  Established in 1573, Minowa is a major urushi refinery in Japan supplying to lacquer artists and maki-e artisans all over the country.    Over the years, few machines have been introduced, but the process of urushi refining remains largely hand-made, requiring highly-experienced artisans.

WHY CHOOSE OUR URUSHI PRODUCTS?

Unlike resellers who translate lacquer product descriptions from manufacturers and books,  Goenne meets with Japanese urushi artisans and experts from the refinery bi-annually to assess current and new urushi products, to bring you our recommendation that is most suitable for kintsugi practice for overseas users.  We carry professional knowledge on urushi products for various craft project needs.

CAUTION:

Although this is Hypoallergenic Urushi, the allergens are still present in the product.  Same precaution should be practiced using Hypoallergenic urushi as regular urushi:

  •  Liquid urushi can cause severe skin allergic reaction, AVOID SKIN CONTACT.  Symptoms include painful rash and blisters.
  • Wipe skin with rapeseed / vegetable oil immediate when urushi comes in contact with skin. In rare cases, urushi fume may trigger allergic reaction. Use in well-ventilated area.
  • Wear gloves and long sleeves when handling wet urushi. Clean worksurface with alcohol and discard contaminated wipes.
  • Keep away from small children.  If ingested, seek medical help immediately.
  • Store in cool, dark places.  Lay tube on the side to avoid precipitation of pigment.
